Qualifications:

  • Masters degree required
  • Massachusetts special education license required
  • Minimum 5 years teaching in special education setting
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Proven communication, organization and writing skills
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Understanding of therapeutic milieu
  • Demonstrated communication, writing, and editing skills
  • Ability to manage multiple and frequent deadlines

Schedule:

  • 12 months/full time
  • Salary and benefits, including vacation time, determined by the Executive Director

Supervised by: Education Director


Responsibilities:

  • Oversee content and instruction of the educational program
  • Provide educational leadership to the team
  • Participate collaboratively in educational leadership groups
  • Work with the Educational Director and Supervisor of Special Education to manage the IEP process, including organizing a schedule, writing and editing IEPs, completing progress reports, attending IEP meetings and presenting educational summaries
  • Work with the Educational Director and Supervisor of Special Education to facilitate achievement and MCAS testing
  • Monitor the team’s curriculum needs and work with the Educational Director on curriculum development and management of instructional budget
  • Keep up-to-date records of student grades/performance
  • Supervise, train, observe, and evaluate teachers as assigned
  • Assist program teachers in designing individual lessons and accommodating for students needs
  • Plan and monitor curriculum within the program
  • Oversee planning for elective and academic programming, teach classes to provide coverage and modeling, as necessary
  • Chair educational planning/consultation meetings
  • Work with Educational Director to determine academic groupings and class scheduling
  • Assess students’ academic levels and needs
  • Support with generating grade reports and transcripts in a timely manner
  • Work with the Education Director to schedule educational/academic interventions as appropriate (speech & language, reading, consulting psychologist,)
  • Work with specialist(s) to meet students’ individual needs (social pragmatics, speech and language, reading,)
  • Utilizing Safety Care techniques help maintain community safety
  • Provide contact and consultation between school and outside agencies (students transitioning in and out of Gifford, hospital placements, students applying to other schools or transitioning back to public school)
  • Respond to student behaviors in the classroom and throughout the milieu by utilizing Gifford behavioral systems
  • Ensure communication and documentation regarding serious incidents and other pertinent matters in a timely and effective manner
  • Develop solid relationships with families and contact parents, as appropriate
  • Attend once-a month administrator led in-service training
  • Remain up to date (daily checks) with all internal email and voicemail messages
  • Participate in a few night meetings
  • Help maintain a safe, positive work and learning environment for all by adhering to the principles of conduct described in Gifford’s policy manuals and by treating all Gifford community members with fairness and respect
  •  Demonstrate respect for diversity among our staff and student body and promote an atmosphere which values this diversity

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to participate in outdoor physical activities to include kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 25 pounds
